From the Garden for the Garden: brick, charcoal, acrylic and beeswax polish on salvaged board, 2014.
The feather, wasp and seeds were all found in my garden. The brick and charcoal also; the brick from a crumbling wall, the charcoal being the carbon remains of pieces of a felled ash tree that once stood in the garden that has kept me warm buring in the log burner during winter days in the studio.
‘Gatherings’ started with the picking up of a feather and the collecting of used envelopes. The envelopes became surfaces for drawings, the feathers became the subject.
Through this project I seek connection with the soft, delicate, ephemeral stuff of the world – feathers, insects, seeds, etc – and also the grounding matter of the world – soil, soft stone, wood.
Simple in form, yet with a richness of substance, the art works seek to act as reminders; reminders to look, to pay attention, to touch and feel that which surrounds us. To engage with a fallen feather for example, is, for that moment, to be in tune with the bird who shed it, and from there, all birds gracing the skies. A narrative of life exists in that one object… Where has it been? What has it felt? What a wonder it is! To my mind (whilst navigating the complexities of the human created elements of this world) this contemplation is a deeply important practice; a practice of reconnection, of finding ones place back in the fold of nature, and in the wisdom of Thich Nhat Hanh, a return home.
bir! bir! was an exhibition I organised and curated for The Barnaby Festival, Macclesfield, June 2014. The emphasis of the exhibition was a focus on birds and our relationship to them.
The artists included where Becky Alvarez (Macclesfield based ceramic artist), John Fanshawe (North Cornwall based artist and bird conservationist), Pete Ward (North Devon based environmental artist) and myself.
